Four Must-See Fashion Films

Fashion is an on-going education and experimentation. It's full of opinions, standards, taste, class, innovation, intelligence, skill, and passion. These are four fashion films that shows us everything from history, to current street style, to the humor in fashion, and behind the scenes coverage. These four films are on my must see list when it comes to fashion.

Coco Before Chanel
I first watched this movie for a film class in college. Before watching it I wasn’t really interested in Chanel (gasp), and never really understood the whole quilted purse thing. It just wasn’t my style. But a mere hour and a half later, I was completely smitten by Coco, played by actress Audrey Tautou. This scene goes back in time when Coco was just a girl learning how to sew. It follows her through her success and her struggle to adjust to her new fame. It’s a fascinating fashion film, and a definite must see.

Bill Cunningham New York
“Fashion is the armor to survive everyday life.”
“He who seeks beauty will find it.”

Bill Cunningham doesn’t discriminate fashion. He doesn’t allow money, glamour, status, or opinions stand in the way of what he chooses to photograph. He photographs fashion as a human expression. This documentary gives an intimate peak into the life of a man who’s led a minimalistic life in the midst of photographing the fashion elite. His knowledge of fashion, in my opinion, is unsurpassed. He’s mastered two forms of art; photography and fashion, and has transformed street style photography along the way.

The Devil Wears Prada
This film reminds me about the humor in fashion. Anne Hathaway plays Andy, a young journalist, who scores the job as Assistant to one of the top fashion magazine editors, Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep). She struggles to fit into her new work place with her out of date sweaters, awkward hairstyle, and clunky shoes. Along the way Andy changes her apparel, which affects her attitude and behavior, which ultimate changes her relationship with her friends, family, and boyfriend. In the end Andy has to choose between what really matters.

The September Issue
Oh, Anna Wintour; our modern Queen of fashion. This film follows Anna, one of the most influential fashion Editors of our time, as she works to publish the anticipated September issue of Vogue magazine.  A modern day peak into the lives of the most powerful fashion editor.
